Lyrical Abstraction

The artist’s recent works, especially her abstracts, evoke the laws of contrasting colors once exploited by impressionist and post-impressionist painters at the end of the 19th century. It is at this point that the entire discourse about the importance of light in painting and also that of perception begins: the tone of two color ranges seems different when they are observed juxtaposed or separated; the ranges offer a completely different perspective.

Creative Environnement

In her studio, Hélène works with light and mixing layers of colors like a chemist; sometimes the results are there, almost instantly, sometimes they disappoint and then it’s necessary to start all over again. The incessant and unsuspected effort behind abstract works often gives the impression (wrongly) that they all just “emerged” spontaneously, under the urging of the spatula.
